Prices of the prized ‘Mankurad’ have begun dropping in the markets, with small to medium-sized mangoes being quoted at Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per dozen, far below the Rs 5,500 to Rs 6,000 in early March.

Also, a larger volume of Mankurad mangoes has begun arriving in the retail markets. In Panaji market, there are now at least a dozen vendors selling the top variety, whereas earlier, there were only two to three vendors.

Of the other varieties available, the Alphonso mango from the Sindhudurg belt was available in the Panaji market at Rs 800 to Rs 1,300 per dozen, depending on their size.

Totapuri mangoes were sold at Rs 180 per kilo, while Sinduri mangoes fetched a price of Rs 200, and Payri mangoes were sold at Rs 300 per kg.

Goa’s GI-tagged ‘Mankurad’ mango was also sold in Taleigao at Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per dozen.

Currently, only some of the many Mankurad mango trees across the State have their fruit ready for harvest. Mango farmers are also unsure what impact last week’s sudden rain will have on their harvests.

However, the bulk of the harvest will happen in mid-April when the mass flow of the prized mangoes will begin, and prices will start falling, a fruit trader in the Panaji market said. The season begins ebbing by mid-May.
